I am the IGNORANT one. According to the Mercedes EPC the 617 070 05 01 injection pump uses a 001 091 99 01 fuel pump which DOES NOT contain a primer pump. All the other 5 cylinder pumps use a 000 090 19 50 or 000 090 20 50 pump which DO carry primer pumps.

I tried to order a new one and was told it did not exist?? Being a novice at this sort of thing, I did not argue. Still, it's a good idea to fill the filter with CLEAN diesel.
