Where did you buy the pad? I bought one and put it in the hot attic. Got
it out to install in car three years later and it had completely
disintegrated.

Do you have pack rats? they will chew the thing up and carry it away to
make a nest, often in the engine compartment. My original pad lasted
more than
10 years, and it's replacement appears to be good for at least the same.
Oil
fumes will kill the pad so make sure your blowby is controlled.
