Well, I found 4 gears this morning. I think I missed it before because it
seems to be about as complicated as this conversation has gotten! (: I
tried a few times and I can't quite determine the 'standard' for my car from
a dead stop (1st or second). Part of my problem was that I thought that L
was 1st, S was 2nd and D was 1-4. It seems L is 1st/2nd which shifts at
20mph. S seems to hold 3rd and D is whatever the hell it feels like. I
*think* mine starts out in 1st, but it goes through 2nd to 3rd so fast at
slow speeds that I would not have realized it went through 2 gears unless I
was listening for it...

Some sit in second gear and then downshift when the accelerator is
moved down. If they don't, likely the vacuum modulator signal is
incorrect and the valve needs replacing (or the hose fixed, etc).
