That's my fault probably. Originally split worked like "select both a road
*and* a node, at which the road should be split". This still works.
There are some situations, when by only selecting one node, it is
obvious what the user wants to split (ie. node in a way, no other way
refers to that node). So I added stuff that made splitting work by
only selecting a node. Thanks for your ticket on this by the way.
I'll try to make the code recognize your case, too.

I agree, a modifier you be useful here (eg shift) to unlink the node
and move it away. But what happens if the node is part of several
ways? If an area verges on a road and both share nodes, one might
want to remove the nodes from the area, but not from the road.
