the decision, however perverse, seems to have been made long ago.

No decision has been made by me (and I don't intend to make one). The wording I
use doesn't actually matters.
Up to you, the users, to decide what wording you think is best for you and
adjust the translations (including English) on
https://translations.launchpad.net/merkaartor/.

For JOSM I already think about changing:

"Node", "Way" to "Point" and "Line" ("Punkt" and "Linie" in German). The only problem is that this is really a LOT of work.

And to use
 * "Area" (de: Fläche) for areas
 * "Object" (de: Objekt) when type unspecified.

It is much easier for merkaartor to unify strings now, as you don't have so many strings yet.

This is also true if native English speakers find my English too obscure, unintelligible or plain wrong ;-) It is actually better than changing the original strings, as then all translations has to be adapted.

While this is true original strings should nevertheless be corrected. I constantly nag Launchpad to finally implement fuzzy string handling, which would solve the problem of redoing translations. Nagging from other sources would help also :-)

Other gettext-tools have such fuzzy string handling since a long time.

Ciao
