Have you thought about using squish to replace the existing compression code? http://www.sjbrown.co.uk/?code=squish As far as I know it's the best compression code out there, it does not only produce very good results, but it's also pretty fast. There's an article about the algorithm here: http://www.sjbrown.co.uk/?article=dxt It's a C++ library, but the code is relatively small and self contained.
