I can assure you that it's illegal to call glGetString() before binding a
context. In a GLX-based environment, the rendering context may be associated
with remote displays and the results of glGetString() will depend on which
display you're talking too. With WGL it may be simpler, but if you had two
graphics cards, the results of glGetString() would depend on which card you're
using - and that's determined by the context binding.
