I've always used debian and I'm not going to ditch it anytime soon. I
have been *forced* to run KMS and start using my own compiled graphic
related stuff because:
- Intelfb has never been working at all on my laptop (amilo XI 3650)
- Vesafb was working but Intel X11 driver did'nt like the what vesa
frame buffer code does as it was using a different resolution and memory
mapping attributes. The disagrement was ranging from just trace in Xorg
log, to oops depending on driver version, and DRM libraries. Simply
updating my packages set lead to X not working several time
- Worse Suspend/resume was horribly broken for months (total freeze
mainly due to simple VT switch), partly because of ACPI, partly because
of i915 kernel code, partly because of X11 Inel driver! So I had to
start the runaway for the ideal version,
I never use self compiled package for fun. I'm 45 and have other more
interesting things to do in life! I use them because I want to have a
working laptop that correctly suspend and resume and a console
framebuffer because X was hanging quite to frequently.

Have filed one months ago. Not even got a single message since then.
Guess what, my hybrid card for video performance on my amilo laptop is
also a Nvidia one so the remaining road will probably be quite long. But
until mplayer can handle bluray disks or I need to use my HDMI/VGA
output, I can live with Intel one as H264 at full res (190x1080) works
god enough.
If I can do any test to help development, tell me. I have to leave with
unpolished things so use me as a tester!
Thanks for all the people who took time to respond. Will probably bug a
bit again the nouveau 2D team for the shutdown hang.
