I remember that Apple has introduced the notion of file ID with the HFS. It
is a tool for identifying a file with its file number in the volume
catalog, and it represents a permanent reference. I don't know if it is a
feasible solution, but this possibility must exist in the MacOS since
version 7. Of course this solution must use a XFCN or a MetaCard extension
that access to the low-level file manager routines, as PBResolveFileIDRef,
PBGetCatInfo,...

The global problem is the coherence of the application with respect to a
multi-platform deployment. Is it desirable to handle each "idiosyncrasy" of
the diverse OS.
