The way I got around the loudness issue is to decide ahead of time what
sounds and players need to be quiet and which need to be loud. In the
program I'm currently writing, a lot of the sounds are background music which
I set to 50% of max volume, while the "foreground sounds" are at 100%. That
way, no matter how the playloudness is adjusted there is proportionality to
the two layers of sound up or down.
