Gambiarra: 'making do', the Brazilian way
    28 Apr 2007

Taking as a starting point the rise in video art in Brazil as both an
important tool in tackling national political issues and attracting
international attention at festivals and biennales, these discussion
sessions address the increasing mobility of artists; the impact of
residencies on their surroundings; the collaboration between art and
sociopolitical subcultures; the importance of sustainability for
artistic practice; and the business of producing and distributing new
    media.

The key concept for the debates is 'gambiarra' (the title of an essay
by Ricardo Rosas included in Caderno Videobrasil 02): a Portuguese
word that conjures up images of clandestine electricity hook-ups in
shanty towns, but also describes a particularly Brazilian attitude to
improvisation when materials are not available. This sense of the
    term
has great symbolic value in Brazil and its wider significance has not
been lost on the visual art scene. The debates build on reflections on
    Caderno Videobrasil 02.

    4.30pm Welcome and Introduction

4.45pm DANIEL LIMA: Artistic collectives as a strategy for
sustainability: tactics for action, broadcasting and propagation

Activist media groups establish self-sustained exchanges and
strategies designed to ensure their existence and to promote exchange
between artists, activists and groups. They also create new modes of
mobility for groups and artists, breaking down boundaries in the art
    world.

Daniel Lima is a multimedia artist who explores design and space in
the urban environment. Coming from a trajectory of interventions and
interferences in the metropolis of São Paulo, he creates unexpected
and potentially deconstructive situations in the urban scenario. He
has made collaborative works in which he developed resources for
education purposes as well as tackling issues to do with the media and
racial problems. He has worked with three groups: "A Revolução Não
Será Televisionada", "Frente 3 de Fevereiro" and "Política do
    Impossível".

    5.15pm Residencies as exchanges

Mobility is a key element in the new scenario, and artistic
residencies play an important role. They promote inclusion (in art
circuits), exchange of information and, therefore, an
    understanding of
other contexts, cultures and production modes. Residencies also impact
their surroundings, and they often result in new forms of association.

5.45pm ALEXANDRE DA CUNHA: The artist as resident

What is the influence of a residency on an artist's career? Da Cunha
gives a personal account of his experience as a resident in terms,
looking at networks of exchange and whether an artist can really
become part of a new circuit.

Alexandre da Cunha (Rio de Janeiro, 1969) is a sculptor and performer
who uses the language of video in his work. His latest works
incorporate humour and very simple technological materials and
resources. In addition to numerous group shows, he has had solo shows
in London, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. He has studied and
    worked in London since 1998.

    6.15 - 6.45pm Break

6.45pm RUBEN FEFFER: The market for new media

Feffer will discuss his experience with ELOAUDIOVISUAL in selling
Latin American new media productions. He will discuss the latest
trends and current production and inclusion strategies, comparing the
interaction with local and global markets.

Ruben Feffer is founder of Elo Audiovisual, which represents and
distributes audiovisual content from Brazil and Latin America.

7.15pm HÉLIO HARA: New strategies in Brazilian art

Access to new technologies, urbanisation and the formation of new
political-economic-cultural maps pose challenges to art and give rise
to new paradigms. In Brazil, the intensification of exchanges,
improvisation and the gambiarra are features of the new strategies.

Helio Hara (Associação Cultiural Videobrasil) is the editor of Caderno
Videobrasil 02 - Art Mobility Sustainability and editor in chief of
"s/n", a top Brazilian magazine focused on Brazilian lifestyle and
arts ranging from photography to fashion. Hara completed a MA in
Science writing at the University of Wales College of Cardiff after
graduating in Journalism in Brazil. He has had a successful career in
O Globo (the largest daily newspaper in Rio de Janeiro) and was
assigned as correspondent in Paris for the Globo media corporation. As
a journalist specialized in arts and trends, he has also contributed
to European and American publications such as V and Courrier
International and worked in the development of content for several
projects and exhibitions in Brazil. In the last few years, together
with WWF, he has developed marketing and social responsibility
projects for corporations in Brazil. Helio's work emphasises a
21st-century/contemporary Brazil to the outside public in an authentic
way, with no concession to stereotyped or tourist-industry-induced
    folklore aspects.
