Belated thanks, Allen!  I've gotten all sorts of useful information from 
newsgroups; I'll have to check those out.

Thanks for telling me about Google Books, too!  I didn't know about 
them.  Last year MHCUG had a presentation on all the things you can do 
with Google, but I don't think they mentioned that one.

I did manage to find out one undocumented thing about my motherboard: 
internal connectors include "One Intel high-definition Audio/Modem Link 
(Not used by HP)" so I took that as a challenge, and managed to find out 
what the connector's for (it's 2x8 with pin 12 missing).  Turns out it's 
meant to connect to a high-end audio card, except there are almost no 
cards that support it AFAIK.  Oh well.
