Oh, okay.  Since I'm not having any actual thermal problems, I think 
I'll wait on that then.  It looks like there'll be a presentation on 
compiling a kernel soon, and I'm looking forward to it.

Yep, it's there.  Everything in that directory is *.ko.gz .  Some of the 
modules, like 
/lib/modules/2.6.22.15-desktop-1.uc1mdv/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko.gz  
, seem to load without a problem.  Maybe Mandriva is doing something 
weird or nonstandard.  I guess I should ask in the Mandriva newsgroup.
