Thanks to Mike Kershaw and Michael Quick for your replies. 

I ended up needing both solutions. One for Ubuntu, the other for Fedora.

Both my Fedora and Ubuntu can now access the Internet, they are using
network interface eth0, and they are both again using the static IP
address I assigned.

To get Ubuntu back to this state, it was sufficient to
edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

When I did the same on Fedora, eth1 still came up and I didn't have
Internet access. I then proceeded to do the fix described above, which
solved the problem.
