Every bit of the android environment is a replaceable component. If you
don't like the Home screen you can write your own that implements the
same component. There are multiple alternative Home environments in the
market.
Sense is HTC's Home replacement. It also is often used to describe
their collection of replacements to the People list, Mail, Gallery,
Calendar, Browser, and the set of glassy widgets for various things.
