After an upgrade to VirtualBox v3.2.4 (I also upgraded the Linux kernel to
version 2.6.34), I am now able to run VirtualBox with the KVM modules loaded
without it causing an error. I then ran virtual machines in both VirtualBox
and KVM simultaneously... and that works too.
