Between you and Chris, you will almost certainly get Ubuntu installed. 
Nevertheless, here's a thought. If you had a Fedora live-CD around, it would 
be worth a try to run the Fedora installer and see if it detects your internal 
HDDs while your external HDD is connected. (After HDD detection, you can just 
cancel the install). This would show whether there is a problem specific to the 
Ubuntu installer. Since you work with RHEL, it might be worthwhile to dabble 
with Fedora.
