It is strange as to why this happened, because the disks were being 
recognized; and sure enough if the option was chosen to install Ubuntu onto 
the USB drive, but the default location to install Grub2 was the first hard 
disk.  Whatever is going on here seems like it's a bizarre software glitch in 
the install code.

Now the next question is -- where's the right place to report this bug, and 
what package should be the bug be against?  ;-)  [This needs to be reported or 
others are going to have the same problem!]  I don't mind helping write the 
bug report, but I'm less familiar with Ubuntu's bug procedures -- so if 
someone can give me an initial pointer as to where this bug should go, that 
would be cool.
