Hey, Jack.

You mentioned that this is an i386 system (P5) -- and I recall Joe running
into a problem with the kernel on the standard Ubuntu version, and he used the
"alternate" install image which got around that problem. You might give that
a try and see what happens. Make sure to get the i386 version of course. ;-)

In theory it shouldn't matter whether you try to do the Install immediately or
whether you boot up to a Desktop on the LiveCD and install from there, because
in /theory/ the kernel should be the same and thus recognize the same
hardware. However I find it /really/ odd that Ubuntu is finding the /second/
hard disk, but not the /first/ one. That tells me something weird is going
on.

Since this is an i386 system I'm assuming you're using IDE hardware, with
Master/Slave/SingleMode/CableSelect jumper options. Dell usually ships drives
on CableSelect by default, and I've occasonally found that problematic. If
the first drive is on a cable with something else, try setting the drive to
Master and the other device to Slave; if it's by itself set it to "Single
Mode", which is usually the same as Master but not always. Then try booting
up the Ubuntu install again and see if the drive gets recognized then.
[Admittedly this is a real long shot since you already had Ubuntu running on
the system, but I'm including this anyway in case it helps.]

I'd certainly enjoy the company if I'm available. The router at my parents'
house crapped during hurricane Sandy; the router was on a UPS, but then
generator power was applied which made the UPS continuously flip between
line/backup, and I think the CF card got corrupted during that. It booted up
once and sent me a status email, but wouldn't route packets and I couldn't ssh
into it. :-( No status email on any successive reboot.

I haven't had a chance to go out there yet because of bridge restrictions, gas
shortages, and my GF getting pneumonia and spending a week in the hospital.
Long Island is now on gas rationing but it is helping the shortages some, and
everything else is (mostly) over with, so I'm hoping to take a trip out there
to try to fix things.

I'll send you an email with my phone # so you can call me on Sunday
regardless. If nothing else I should be able to help you out that way; and if
by chance I'm still around maybe I'll get a chance to help you out in person.
;-)

And I'm looking forward to seeing everybody again at an MHVLUG meeting when I
can make it.
