Which has been my problem with the trend in distros to hack the runlevels to boot to the GUI in runlevels 2 & up, rather than the old standard of using runlevel5 for the GUI. Used to be the lower runlevels were set as text-only (so you could have networking and full functionality without having to bring up X).
