In other words, we are talking about something that can be used as an
unlocked phone, even though you primarily plan on using it for other
things. You did NOT buy a two year phone contract that came with a
phone at a subsidized price. You could easily put a sim card in it for
occaisional use, which is what my wife does with hers. When she is home,
she can just tap into the router.

Emphasizing this point, which a lot of people have been missing: I am
not intending to use this as a phone. I am specifically looking for
smoething to use as a PDA, in the way PalmOS used to work. If it can
never connect to the cellular networks? I don't care, I never wanted
it to, and it's no loss that it never will. The larger point is that
when PalmOS went away, the concept of a "smartphone" became a sorely
inadequate and definitely incomplete substitute. My experimenting is
to see just how much of the lost functionality that we used to have
can be regained. I should be able to maintain and sync my data
locally. I should not be dependent on some unknown server in some
unknown location/country to synchronize between a couple of devices
taht are 2 feet away from each other. But I'm not about to blow
hundreds of dollars on something far flashier tahn what I need for the
experiment.
