Ok then, how about hiring someone to watch his e-mail while he's gone, and calling in occasionally on a satellite phone?  :)

I forward e-mail as txt all the time.  For at&t wireless (for example) you would forward messages to ##########@txt.att.net
If he already has a text message plan, then this solution is essentially free.
