First, I would scan the web for real-world mileage reports on that make and
model. Ignore super high and super low reports as BS.

Then if you are below the range do the things mentioned, tune-up etc.

Low resistance tires can save 10% of gas, that's like saving 40 cents on
every gallon!

With all the tricks and tires, you might see 10-20% above the average real
world mileage average from your research, so if that wont be worth it, get a
cheaper car to run. I'm buying a Dodge Neon and planning mid to high 30's
highway with it

Grab a obd2 scanner and make sure your fuel trims are in order. A faulty o2
sensor may not throw a cel but will effect gas mileage greatly. Other than
that, a top end cleaning wouldn't hurt but a lower rear end ratio would be
the biggest improvement.

I know this is a mazda forum, and more importantly, a miata forum, but I am
not sure where else to go, and you all seem to be the most knowledgeable
people I can find about mazda engines and improving the gas mileage. I
don't drive a Mazda, but a 2WD 02 Kia Sportage. Through my research, I've
found that the Kia engine may really be a Mazda engine, (1.6 liter FE3 ?).
(thanks to solomiata- http://members.aol.com/solomiata/FE3.html). Hence, why
I'm here.

I live in Dallas, and freeways are non-negotiable unless going next door. At
freeway speeds (65-80+), my Sportage is running at 4K rpms and drinking gas
like there's no tomorrow. When I bought it a year ago, the guy told me he
was getting 26 mpg plus. I have yet to see over 21, and most of the time, it
runs 16 to 17 mpg. Granted, I run 87 octane, but surely there's a way I can
get close to 30 mpg. Heck, my brother in law gets 16mpg with a V8 chevy
truck.

Mazda gurus, help, please. what can be done to improve the mileage? This car
has 96K miles and is paid for, which is part of the reason I am willing to
mod this car instead of just selling it. I've read the emails on using a
Dodge Neon ECU+ Protege engine to theoretically get better gas mileage and
am considering that, but does anyone have any other suggestions as to engine
mods or any others that I can do here with the minimum amount of frame
reconstruction / engine mount re-welding, etc.?

There aren't many Kia forums I've found with a lot of promise in this.
Mostly just folks like me with crappy mileage asking the same questions.
Thanks for any help you guys can suggest. No suggestion is too far out at
present.

Thanks,

Tim
