All that *is* mind boggling!

In silicon valley, several startups are working on microbes that produce
oil, including one that digests garbage and oil floats to the top so pure it
can be put right into diesel engines. The process is carbon negative too!

There is also algae oil, and back to traditional dead dinosaurs oil,
enhanced recovery which could add hundreds of billions of reserves right
from existing wells.

I believe we are in a upcoming age of energy diversity that will break all
the assumptions, and for the better.

Example of Global Supply and Demand - Quote from a Agora Financial

"The Economist reports that car ownership in Russia is well below that of
other developing countries. In Russia, about 200 out of every 1,000 people
own a car. The ratio is over 500 out of every 1,000 people in Europe, and
about 800 in the U.S.

In 2007, new car sales were up 36% by volume - some 57% by value, reflecting
the new buying power of Russia's burgeoning middle class. Some think that
this year, Russia will surpass Germany as Europe's largest car buyer.
"[According to Ernst & Young], by 2012, Russians will be buying more than 5
million new cars a year," The Economist continues, "of which nearly 90% will
be foreign brands."

Think of the consequences of so many new cars hitting the road. Add in China
and India. Think of all the fuel they will have to burn. All the steel
consumed. The roads yet to be paved. The storefronts and hotels and all the
trappings that go with an increasingly mobile population. It's
mind-boggling.

Some might mourn the passing of Russia's wild frontier. But these changes
are like letting the toothpaste out of the tube. They seem irreversible.
Russians, enjoying the taste of this new wild form of capitalism, would seem
unlikely to shift into reverse. Strange things happen all the time, of
course, but I'm betting Russia will stay in the big leagues with China,
India and Brazil as an economic powerhouse."

Actually, you are correct that it's the economics that will act like a law
of physics in changing consumers direction. I now have 2 geo metro's,
something I never would have considered at $2.00 gas - and look forward to
the Chevy Volt, and all the other cool second gen alternative cars on the
drawing board.

As to water, (and electricity) I feel it should cost more after a certain
amount. That way basic uses will remain affordable, but water and
electricity hogs such as Al gore will be given a financial incentive to
replace their missing conscience,.

Here in RI, our Governor has proposed a vast wind farm just off shore (where
there is ideal wind), to generate 15% of our electricity. Once the mob
finds a way to get their cut, Im sure there will be no stopping it.

I have said for years - although no one has ever listened - that gasoline
should cost more. I'll complain as much as anyone, but price will - and
already has - had a major impact on the consumer's decision making. New
truck and SUV sales are way off this year.

Ever ride bumper cars at the fair? Nobody gets hurt because all the
"vehicles" are the same size. That's the way to make our streets and
highways safer as well.

And, FWIW, here in the arid west water should be a lot more expensive as
well. It is way to cheap and people make a lot of bad decisions based on
cheap water.

Personally, I would love to see oil stay high like it is - but not enough
to break the economy - and let the economics continue to spur alternatives
to enough of an unstoppable degree that even if the competition drives oil
back down (not likely with china and india and oil nations themselves
increasing demand), we have other choices.

There seems delightfully a bewildering array of alternatives RIGHT NOW!
solar, wind, thermal, tidal, safer nuclear, electricf cars, hydrauilic
hybrids, better batteries, fuel cells, smart highways, SO MUCH!

Why would anyone go back to singular reliance on stinky fossil fuels alone?

Even though I disagree with everything Thomas said and have a huge problem
with his leftist thinking, I don't see any reason to stop him from saying
it. If he wants to show that he is a complete moron (in a NMC/NPC thread) I
have no problem with it. If someone starts spouting political garbage in my
"rear main oil seal" thread then they should be strung up by their
testicles.
