spring free length is not necessarily tied to ride height.

example: a spring 10 inches long and 100 lb/in rate will compress 5 inches
to support a 500 lb load.

a spring 6 inches long with a 500 lb/in rate will compress 1 inch to
support a 500 lb load.

both will end up 5 inches long when loaded to 500 lbs. the difference is
that when you put another 100 lbs on the longer spring, it will compress
another inch while the shorter spring will only compress 1/5 of an inch.

oh and if your tie rods aren't the same length, you may have more steering
travel in one direction and less in the other?
