"Why would anyone want to go to diesel now..." Fewer moving parts. More efficient. Longevity. The question should be "Why haven't we gone to diesel more up until now?"
We should be in diesel up to our eyeballs. If the demand were more the supply would catch up and prices would be more stable. We've had diesel electric locomotives for a long time. Now we have a gas electric Prius. My father put a small diesel motor in a 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle. It has more power, gets 45MPG, and he runs 50/50 diesel and used vegetable oil.
