Mark,
My comments are mainly only valid for non-commericial use trucks I suppose (15
qt. oil changes). No I don't buy only based on the price of fuel, but total
cost of use for the intended period I think I'll use it. The mtc. schedule,
price premium, and my intended limited use make the diesel the wrong choice for
me. Back in 2000, when the fuel cost, price premium, and resale values were
different, so was the choice. Also, notice I said I *would* miss the torque.
I will admit to not investigated the cost benefit of making the fuel. I do
appreciate and acknowledge the virtues of diesels, but they aren't for me.

What diesel do you have? My Jetta doesn't take 15 quarts of oil (uses 4+,
like a normal car), and only needs oil every 10k miles. The 06 Jetta is
already rated for the low sulfur fuel, so that's not a problem. And if you
make the fuel yourself, or use a WVO system, your fuel costs are significantly
lower.
Are you going to E85? That's like $1.55 out here.
Do you buy your car/truck based solely on the cost of gas?

Again, why would anyone want to buy a diesel now (in the US)?
On pre '07 diesels:
* Impending injector failure due to low sulfer fuel
* 15 qt oil changes
* Increased routine mtc.
* Obviously more expensive fuel
On '07 up models
* Impending replacment of mega-dollar urea canister catalyst thing (but
injectors will be OK)
This all in addition to the diesel initial cost premium. Diesels should
last longer, though this probably won't factor for most non-commercial
users.
My next tow vehicle purchase will be gasoline after using/maintaining a
diesel since 2000.
I do admit the reduced torque will be missed while towing
