Did the mechanic check the harmonic balancer? At that mileage (kilometerage?) it's a possibility.

The new belt would not stay on. He then replaced the tensioner and thhat still didn't help, he tried putting the old belt/old tensioner back on, didn't help. He then put new tensioner and old belt on and this worked for a 4 hour road trip (luckily). Since then its been a struggle to try and keep it on for any length of time... 15 min even. Is there a way to figure out whats causing the problem? or more importantly how to make it stay on? I know the vehicle is getting really old, but she is not in a position to replace the beast. Sorry for the non Miata question but i really value the knowledge in this forum so I'm hoping someone has an idea on how to solve this.
