It takes only a few degrees increase above average temperatures for a number of years to melt the polar ice cap and cover much of the land mass in water. The oceans cover approximately two thirds of the Earth's surface, and they receive the most sun. Raise the temperature of the oceans and you add significant heat to the world. The ice has been melting. It was slow at first, but it has been melting quicker in recent years and water levels have risen. It is highly unlikely that we'll be capable of making the water recede, making it freeze again. Average temperatures have been climbing. While some parts of the world are experiencing colder winters, many parts are experiencing moderate or warmer winters.
