Where do you live that you think that there are people in the US will “never
get to see a doctor” Have you ever been in an emergency room and seen all the
people using it to get their primary care since they don’t have a regular
doctor?

I also LOVE the attitude that in Canada you will EVENTUALLY get to see a
doctor?? I don’t want to EVENTUALLY get to see a doctor. I want to see a
doctor when I need one.

Because they have extra money. They're paying for that medical care. They
could have stayed in Canada to pay for that higher level of medical care. We
have private clinics in every major city that specialize in every treatment
that they could make a business case to offer. It would have cost about the
same or less at a private clinic in Canada in many cases. People are free to
shop around for the best price, no matter what they're buying.

In the Canadian system, if you need a doctor, you'll get one eventually no
matter who you are. In the US, a scary percentage of the population will never
get to see a doctor. If I had to choose eventually or never, I'll pick
eventually. If I had to choose between being poor in Canada or poor in the
USA, I'll pick Canada. If I were REALLY rich, I probably wouldn't choose
either the US or Canada, I'd be somewhere like the Cayman Islands or Monaco.
I'm guessing there are not a lot of billionaires on the miata power list? I'm
assuming the audience on this list is not that rich on average?

Would you believe Canadians have very strong capitalist values too? Our
government is overall quite right wing, certainly at least as right wing as
your Democratic party is. There's a way to overhaul your system that will be
better for everyone in your country, on average. It doesn't have to mean
you'll pay MORE in taxes, or MORE for health care. Quit blaming lobbyists or
the legal system or doctors or the boogeyman. Almost every other
industrialized nation has figured it out. You guys can get it right someday
too.

Good luck.

get medical care while they are here??

Thank God I'm Canadian. Americans are hilarious.

In Canada there's zero talk of abandoning universal public coverage for basic
medical. We argue about how much more public money should be dumped into
health care, but nobody would dream of suggesting we make the system more like
the US. We do have private clinics and people debate how far we should go to
support that system. And yeah, rarely you have to wait a long time for a
procedure depending on the situation. If you're rich, you can always pay for a
private procedure, and if you're poor, the government will often send you to
the private clinic and cover your costs, including travel in many cases. For
the vast majority of problems, you'll get a doctor soon enough.

I'm a landlord, and I work a salary job. I make $60,000 per year. I pay LESS
taxes than I would pay if I were to live in the US, once you consider that
there I would have to pay taxes on my business profits, then separately pay my
medical expenses. I paid 23% tax last year. If I made more money than I do
from my rental business, I would simply incorporate and pay even LOWER taxes,
somewhat less than 20%. I would still have at least as much health coverage as
the student or senior on a pension that rents from me. I would also be free to
buy additional medical insurance coverage if I wanted to. On top of that, I
would STILL be free to pay for individual procedures/diagnostics directly if I
were unwilling to wait. It would still be cheaper for me to go that route than
to do it the American way. I've lived in both Canada and the US. I've seen
both systems first hand. I've seen American cousins members bankrupted and
lose their homes simply because they had a child born with Downs Syndrome. The
only way they could get ANY medical coverage for their child was to go on
welfare. Ironically, the mother is a nurse. What a great system. Count me
out. In Canada the government would have paid to have the house renovated to
be more accessible and the family would get a free wheel chair accessible van
(via tax credits).

Why do you think nobody in the rest of the industrial world is trying to model
their health systems after the US?

I think the point was “create a small business” then join a small business
group plan, instead of a “personal” plan.

I just checked with the local Chamber of Commerce and they don't know what
you're talking about.

They've never heard of an insurance program that's available by joining the
Chamber

yes. if you have the money to buy health coverage to begin with (:you should
pay for insurance if you want it), and have no job let say, then just start a
small business by opening a checking acct, print some business cards, join your
local chamber, and presto you in a group health plan with no way they can
refuse you. might even make a few $$ with your new small business too.

it's a free country, put your freedom to woirk for you by making smart choices.

also, there are other resources for state-subsidized health coverage in many
states if you are truly destitute.

Let's see... the economy is sucky, more people are out of work than,
well...perhaps EVER, home foreclosure counts have never been higher, only the
wealthy have money to invest, and you suggest getting hired by a company that
has health coverage or starting one's own business? My friend, don't you

the preexisting issue is greatly exxagerated. to replace that with bad scial
