in locale's near me, the chamber of commerce's offer blue cross plans to their self employed members.  i almost signed up then we got insurance through my wifes job.
 
maybe its not the same everywhere...

I think the point was “create a small business” then join a small business group plan, instead of a “personal” plan.

I just checked with the local Chamber of Commerce and they don't know what you're talking about.
 
They've never heard of an insurance program that's available by joining the Chamber

yes.  if you have the money to buy health coverage to begin with (:you should pay for insurance if you want it), and have no job let say, then just start a small business by opening a checking acct, print some business cards, join your local chamber, and presto you in a group health plan with no way they can refuse you.  might even make a few $$ with your new small business too.
 
it's a free country, put your freedom to woirk for you by making smart choices.
 
also, there are other resources for state-subsidized health coverage in many states if you are truly destitute.

Let's see... the economy is sucky, more people are out of work than, well...perhaps EVER, home foreclosure counts have never been higher, only the wealthy have money to invest, and you suggest getting hired by a company that has health coverage or starting one's own business?     My friend, don't you think that people are attempting to do this every day?
