I have a dear friend who was talking about bankruptcy to relieve some debt. They spend $600/mo on cigarrette's! They also have a car payment. BOTH are optional. We dont smoke and our three older cars not only get great MPG, but they are paid for (including the 92 Miata with leather interior which I love)
When our income took a dip, and the state's economy crumbled, we sold our seaside house and are looking a bit more rural for one ofd these forclosure deals to fix up. Meanwhile, our rent is $500 LOWER than the modest mortage was, and our utilities are lower too.
You can anticipate life somewhat at last financially and make adjustments before you get in trouble. We did.
I recognize that some things are unavodable. Like if I stumble on Bill's V8 page one more time then our house fund may take a big hit. ;)

I disagree. Make better choices. Rearrange your priorites. You don't need cable or a cell phone or to eat out. Shelter, food, the rest is up to you. If you want healthcare to be next, you will be able to afford it.
