I am normally pretty polite. I have only once felt like throwing anything through an autoparts store window. I bought an alternator at Advance. It contained a very crude regulator that made my Miata's instrument cluster flicker like a Christmas tree. They put it on their tester and it was "good". They would not take it back. I suspect that part of the difference in opinion was the huge battery that they have in the bottom of their test cart. It smoothed out the massive fluctuations in output. A junkyard unit worked much better and cost less.

As you suspect the alternator is failing and will probably replace it, why not remove it and take it to Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, or some other parts store that can test its output at different RPM ranges? If it turns out that it IS failing, you can trade it for core charge at the store to reduce the price of the new one.

Subject: Checking alternator?

I think my alternator is going out. Will removing the negative cable while
the engine running tell me if it's putting out juice. I know this is really
old school, but it's a quick check.

The car is a '91 with a Link computer.
