It's not necessary to disconnect the battery to see if the alternator is charging it. When a battery is running the engine by itself the voltage will be around 12v (less if it's been working alone for a while). If the alternator is working it will keep the battery above 13v.

As you suspect the alternator is failing and will probably replace it, why not remove it and take it to Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, or some other parts store that can test its output at different RPM ranges? If it turns out that it IS failing, you can trade it for core charge at the store to reduce the price of the new one.
