1860 – French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville makes the
first sound recording when he records a female voice singing onto his
invention, the Phonautograph. Unfortunately, the inventor records the
sound waves only to study them, not knowing how to play them back.
They have since been processed into a recordable format and heard.
1953 – Elvis Presley performs "Keep Them Cold Icy Fingers Off Of Me"
at the Humes High School talent show. He goes over so well that they
bring him back to sing "Till I Waltz Again With You."
1956 – Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps record “Be-Bop-A-Lula” at the
WCMS Radio studio in Norfolk, Virginia.
1956 – Frank Sinatra records “Hey! Jealous Lover” at Capitol Studios
in Hollywood.
1958 – Johnny Cash records “Oh Lonesome Me” and two other songs for
his next single, “Guess Things Happen That Way” and “Come In
Stranger,” at Sun Studio in Memphis.
1962 – The film adaptation of the musical West Side Story walks away
with 10 Oscars, including Best Musical Score and Best Sound Recording
at the 34th Academy Awards ceremony held at the Santa Monica Civic
Auditorium. Henry Mancini’s and Johnny Mercer’s “Moon River” wins for
Best Original Song.
1963 – The Beatles have a busy day, first recording an interview for
the BBC radio show Pop Inn at the BBC Paris Studio in London, then
travelling to Wembley Studios for the television show Tuesday
Rendezvous, where they lip-synch “From Me To You.” In the evening, the
group performs at the Gaumont Cinema in Kilburn, London.
1964 – Capitol Records settles their lawsuit against Vee Jay Records
out of court, which has Vee Jay paying Capitol's fees and royalties to
The Beatles, while retaining their licensing agreement until October.
1965 – The Rolling Stones make their first live appearance on Ready,
Steady, Go!
1965 – Bruce Johnston joins The Beach Boys.
1965 – The Beatles release their single "Ticket To Ride" b/w "Yes It
Is" in the UK.
1966 – The Byrds' "Eight Miles High" debuts on the Billboard Hot 100
chart.
1966 – Jeff Beck collapses on stage from exhaustion during a Yardbirds
concert in Marseilles, France.
1967 – The Doors and Jefferson Airplane play two shows at The Cheetah
on the Santa Monica Pier.
1969 – Ray Charles, Lynn Kellogg and John Hartford perform on The Glen
Campbell Goodtime Hour.
1970 – Pink Floyd kicks off their second North American tour at
Fillmore East in New York City.

1986 – Dave Clark's “Time - The Musical” opens at the Dominion Theatre

1989 – 52-year old Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman announces he is

2007 – Tanya Tucker is sued by her manicurist for $300,000, claiming
Tucker's dogs attacked her when she went to the star's home to give a
manicure.
2008 – Elton John holds a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall for
Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, raising $2.5 million.
