1949 – Frank Sinatra, along with The Ken Lane Quintet, records “The
Huckle Buck.”
1953 – Eddie Fisher is discharged from the Army, and a check is
waiting for him for $330,000 for the 7 million records he sold while
in the Army.
1955 – Elvis Presley releases his single, “Baby Let’s Play House” b/w
“I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone” on Sun Records.
1956 – Leo Fender patents the Stratocaster electric guitar.
1956 – Midway through a concert at Municipal Auditorium in Birmingham,
Alabama, Nat “King” Cole is attacked on stage by six white
segregationist men who are planning on kidnapping the singer. The six
men are arrested, and Cole bravely plays a second show later in the
evening.
1957 – 16-year old Ricky Nelson lip-synchs to "I'm Walkin'" in the
"Ricky, The Drummer" episode of The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet.
1958 – Bobby Darin records "Splish Splash," “Queen Of The Hop” and
"Judy Don't Be Moody" on an 8-track console at Atlantic Studios in New
York.
1961 – Del Shannon appears on American Bandstand, singing "Runaway."
1965 – A North Wales public school urges parents to make sure their
children dress in the school uniform instead of the popular corduroy
pants worn by The Rolling Stones.
1965 – Dusty Springfield, Heinz, The Zombies and Bobby Vee play the
final two shows of their package tour at the Sophia Gardens in
Cardiff, Wales.
1967 – Marvin Gaye records "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in
Studio A at Hitsville U.S.A.
1967 – Nancy and Frank Sinatra’s "Somethin' Stupid" hits #1 on the
Billboard pop chart, making them the first father-daughter team to
have a #1 single.
1967 – A day after arriving in L.A., Paul McCartney and Mal Evans
visit John and Michelle Phillips at their home in Benedict Canyon.
Later in the evening, McCartney travels to Western Studios in
Hollywood to visit Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys who are recording
“Vegetables.” McCartney performs “She’s Leaving Home” for those in
attendance, and supposedly participates on The Beach Boys’ recording
by chewing some vegetables, before returning to the Phillips’ home in
the early morning hours of the next day.
1968 – At the invitation of Bill Kreutzmann, Micky Hart joins The
Grateful Dead as a second drummer.
1970 – In a press release, Paul McCartney announces that The Beatles
have split up.
1970 – Atomic Rooster's Carl Palmer joins Keith Emerson from The Nice
and Greg Lake from King Crimson to form Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
1970 – Miles Davis appears at Fillmore West in San Francisco, and
records the show for a live album release.
1970 – The Doors perform two shows in Boston. During the second show,
a very drunk Jim Morrison taunts the audience with, "Do you want to
see my genitals?" after which the promoters pull the plug.
1970 – Bobby Goldsboro records the Mac Davis song "Watching Scotty
Grow" at Woodland Sound Studio in Nashville.
1972 – Elvis Presley performs at the Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia.
1976 – Stevie Wonder appears in an ad in Down Beat magazine endorsing
the Mu-Tron III effects pedal for synthesizers.
1976 – UK music weekly Melody Maker reviews a Sex Pistols gig with the
words, “I hope we shall hear no more of them.”
1978 – Cher and new boyfriend Gene Simmons of KISS appear on the cover

1999 – Here, There And Everywhere: A Concert For Linda is held at the
Royal Albert Hall in memory of Linda McCartney, and as a benefit for
her favorite animal rights causes. Performers include Chrissie Hynde,

1999 – Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are the musical guests on

2001 – Bruce Springsteen wins his court battle to keep the rights to
his early songs after Ronald Winter of Masquerade Music released the
album Before The Fame. Winter is found to be in breach of copyright.
2001 – Eminem receives 2 years probation after admitting to carrying a
concealed weapon outside a club in Warren, Michigan the previous June
and pistol whipping John Guerra after he saw him kissing his wife.
2002 – South Carolina Governor James Hodges declares James Brown the
state's official "Godfather of Soul."
2004 – Janet Jackson doubles as host and musical guest on Saturday
Night Live.
2007 – Johnny Cash's long-time lakeside home in Hendersonville,
Tennessee - now owned by Bee Gee Barry Gibb - burns to the ground.
