1956 – The Ampex Corporation of Redwood City, California demonstrates
the first videotape recorder, the VRX-1000, in Chicago. The machine,
invented by Ray Dolby, Charles Ginsburg and Charles Anderson, records
both images and sound.
1960 – Inspired by Elvis' stint in the Army, the Broadway production
of Bye Bye Birdie opens at the Martin Beck Theatre, where it will run
for 607 performances.
