1955 – Elvis Presley releases his fourth Sun single, "Baby Lets Play

1955 – Bo Diddley's anthem, "Bo Diddley," reaches the R&B chart, where
it will stay for 18 weeks.
1956 – Buddy Holly visits an optometrist and gets a prescription for
contact lenses, but continues wearing his glasses, which will become
his trademark.
1956 – Patti Page releases her single, "Allegheny Moon" b/w "The
Strangest Romance."
1957 – Nat "King" Cole records "Send For Me" with the Billy May
Orchestra at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
1957 – Elvis Presley is rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after
swallowing a porcelain cap from one of his front teeth, which then
lodged in one of his lungs. Elvis was rehearsing a dance routine for
Jailhouse Rock when this occurred.
1959 – The juvenile delinquent film, Serious Charges, the first film
to feature Cliff Richard, premieres in Britain.
1959 – Frank Sinatra records "Talk To Me" at Capitol Studios in
Hollywood.
1960 – The Beatles - John, Paul, George, Stu and Pete - appear as The
Silver Beats for the first and only time at the Latham Hall in
Liverpool auditioning for promoter Brian Kelly. Also auditioning are
The Deltones, and King Size Taylor and The Dominoes. The Silver Beats
pass the audition, but are already booked by Larry Parnes as The
Silver Beetles to back up Johnny Gentle on tour.
1962 – 15-year old Helen Shapiro becomes the youngest entertainer to
headline the London Palladium.
1963 – Lesley Gore records "Judy's Turn To Cry," with Quincy Jones
producing, at A&R Studios in New York City.
1964 – Elvis Presley records "Roustabout" at Radio Recorders in
Hollywood.
1964 – Jan and Dean begin recording "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" in

1977 – Following a Talking Heads show at The Rock Garden in London,
Brian Eno goes backstage and meets David Byrne.
1985 – Michael Jackson receives a humanitarian award from President
Reagan.
1987 – Frank Sinatra, who had played in South Africa before, suddenly
condemns the Apartheid regime publicly, referring to President P.W.
Botha as "a bum."
1988 – Atlantic Records' star-studded 40th anniversary celebration
takes place at Madison Square Garden, featuring The Coasters, The
Rascals, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Foreigner, Wilson Pickett, Emerson,

1993 – Christie's auction house sells a 1942 Martin D18 acoustic
guitar used by Elvis Presley on his first Sun recordings for $152,312.
1997 – British soul singer Mark Morrison is jailed for three months
and ordered to pay £350 in court costs for threatening a police
officer with an electric stun gun outside an all-night supermarket in
October 1996.
1998 – George Michael is convicted of committing "lewd acts" in an
L.A. park bathroom and is fined $810 and ordered to perform 80 hours
of community service.
2002 – Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Little Richard all receive the Icon
Award at the 50th Annual BMI Pop Awards in Beverly Hills.
2002 – The musical We Will Rock You opens in the West End of London at
the Dominion Theatre. Written by British comedian and author Ben Elton
in collaboration with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, the
musical has since become the longest-running musical at the Dominion.
2003 – Lawyers for Britney Spears and the Skechers footwear company
settle a dispute over a deal for the pop star to market a line of
roller skates and accessories. Spears filed a $1.5 million breach of
agreement lawsuit against Skechers in December 2002, claiming the
company failed to pay her adequately. Skechers responded with a $10
million lawsuit, accusing Spears of fraud and breach of the three-year
licensing agreement she signed in January 2002.
2004 – While awaiting his murder trial, Phil Spector is arrested for
fighting with his chauffeur at his mansion. He is later released after
a court date is set.
2005 – Rapper 50 Cent is court ordered to stay clean and sober and
take anger management classes to avoid jail time for assaulting three
women at a concert in 2004.
2008 – Metallica kicks off their 26-date North American and European
tour at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
2011 – Country music singers Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are
married in Boerne, Texas.
