1888 – Emile Berliner gives the first public demonstration of the
Gramophone to fascinated members of Philadelphia's Franklin Institute,
using a 7” one-sided disc with a two minute capacity, hand cranked to
30 RPM.
1953 – The Ames Brothers, with Hugo Winterhalter's Orchestra and
Chorus, record “You, You, You” at Manhattan Center in New York City.
1953 – "Crazy, Man, Crazy" by Bill Haley and His Comets hits the
charts, and becomes the first rock and roll record to chart on
Billboard.
1963 – The Beatles make their second appearance on national BBC
television on the children's show Pops And Lenny, performing "From Me
To You" and “Please Please Me.”
1965 – The Rolling Stones' limo is attacked by female fans on the way
back to their hotel after a show in Long Beach, California, caving in
the roof of the car.
1965 – The Beach Boys appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing "Help
Me Rhonda," and Petula Clark sings "I Know A Place." Also on the show
is The West Point Glee Club.
1966 – Frank Sinatra records "Summer Wind" in Hollywood.
1967 – The Jeff Beck Group appears at the Corn Exchange in Bristol.

1968 – Tony Joe White records "Polk Salad Annie" at Fame Studios in

1969 – Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady is arrested at a hotel
in New Orleans for possession of marijuana.
1969 – John Lennon attempts to get a visa to visit America after his
previous visa had been revoked by the U.S. Embassy ten days earlier
because of his drug conviction in 1968.
1969 – Pete Townshend kicks a man off stage at a show at Fillmore East
and is arrested for assaulting a plain-clothed policeman who climbed
on stage to announce that there was a fire. Townshend spends the night
in jail and is fined $30.

1970 – The Jackson 5 releases their single, "The Love You Save" b/w "I

1970 – Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin is arrested in a Bloomington,
Minnesota hotel for possession marijuana and contributing to the
delinquency of minors with two teenage girls.
1972 – The Oakland Coliseum hosts The Baddest Soul Show Of 1972,
featuring Al Green, Etta James and Joe Simon.
1974 – Neil Young shows up unannounced at The Bottom Line in New York
City and plays an acoustic set of songs from his new album, On The
Beach.
1975 – Chubby Checker hosts an “oldies” edition of The Midnight
Special, featuring performances by himself, Bo Diddley, The Drifters,
Lesley Gore, The Angels, The Tymes, and Danny and The Juniors.
1976 – Patti Smith makes her UK debut at The Roundhouse in London.
1976 – Mayor James McGee of Dayton, Ohio, declares the day "Ohio

1977 – The London Evening Standard reports that Led Zeppelin singer
Robert Plant has been arrested at the Atlanta Airport for being drunk
and pulling a knife. Plant was at his home in Wales at the time of the
incident, and the person arrested was a man impersonating Plant.
1980 – The Carpenters' final television special, Music, Music, Music,
airs on ABC.
1980 – Queen's Brian May collapses on stage and is diagnosed as having
hepatitis for the second time.
1980 – Elvis Presley's doctor George Nichopoulous is brought before
the Memphis medical board and officially charged with 14 counts of
abusing his right to prescribe medication.
1980 – Former Buggles members Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn replace Jon
Anderson and Rick Wakeman in Yes.
1983 – NBC airs Motown's 25th Anniversary Special, which features

sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison. He will be released after 22
months.

1998 – Keith Richards falls off a ladder while reaching for a book in
his Connecticut home, breaking several ribs which postpones dates on

2010 – Paul McCartney tells Scotland's Sunday Mail newspaper that he
