1932 – Broadway singer/actress Helen Morgan records her single “Bill” and 
“Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” in New York City, from Oscar Hammerstein and 
Jerome Kern’s production of Showboat.

1947 – 17-year old Bonnie Campbell joins Buck Owens’ band as a back-up 
singer. Owens and Campbell will marry the following year.

1957 – Lee Andrews and The Hearts perform “Lonely Lonely Nights” and “Tear 
Drop” on American Bandstand.

1958 – 17-year old Cliff Richard signs with EMI’s Columbia label.

1960 – Johnny Horton records “North To Alaska.”

1961 – Sam Cooke records “Frankie And Johnny” at RCA Studios in New York 
City.

1962 – Brenda Lee records “All Alone Am I” at Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut 
studio in Nashville.

1963 – Ready Steady Go! debuts on ITV in the UK. First show guests include

1965 – The Silkie - a Brian Epstein-managed folk group - records “You’ve 
Got To Hide Your Love Away” at IBC Studios in London, with John Lennon 
producing, Paul McCartney on guitar, and George Harrison on tambourine.

1967 – Small Faces’ “Itchycoo Park” enters the UK singles chart.

1968 – Paul McCartney records “Mother Nature’s Son” in 25 takes at Abbey 
Road studios.

1968 – The 8th annual National Jazz & Blues Festival begins at Kempton Park 
Racecourse in Sunbury. Artists appearing over the three day event include 
Marmalade, The Herd, Deep Purple, The Jeff Beck Group, Joe Cocker, T. Rex, 
Jethro Tull, Chicken Shack, Ten Years After, John Mayall, Traffic, The 
Nice, The Incredible String Band, Ronnie Scott and others. Jerry Lee Lewis 
also performs, and whips the crowd into such a frenzy that festival 
officials stop his performance and kick him off the stage.

1968 – James Brown and The Famous Flames perform at Balboa Stadium in San 
Diego.

1969 – Sly and The Family Stone release their single, “Hot Fun In The 
Summertime” b/w “Fun.”

1969 – Three Dog Night releases their single, “Easy To Be Hard” b/w 
“Dreaming Isn’t Good For You” on the Dunhill label.

1969 – Four members of the Charles Manson “family” go to the former home of 
record producer Terry Melcher and kill everyone inside.

1969 – Led Zeppelin appears at the Anaheim Convention Center in southern 
California, with opening act Jethro Tull.

1974 – Four members of the band Chase are killed in a chartered airplane 
crash in Jackson, Minnesota.

1976 – ZZ Top, Johnny and Edgar Winter, and Blue Öyster Cult appear at San 
Diego Stadium.

1978 – Muddy Waters performs at a picnic on the White House lawn for 
President and Mrs. Carter.

1980 – Ten original Gerald Scarfe drawings for Pink Floyd's The Wall album 
are stolen from the foyer of Earls Court in London, where they’re being 
exhibited.

1985 – The Motown Revue television show debuts on NBC-TV, and is a flop.

1994 – At an Oasis gig at The Riverside in Newcastle upon Tyne, Noel 
Gallagher hits himself in the face with the headstock of his guitar when a 
man jumps on stage and lunges at him. He refuses to play on and the group 
leaves the stage, after which a mob of over 300 people attack the band’s 
bus as they are leaving.

1999 – Creator and manager of The Spice Girls, Bob Herbert is killed in a 
car accident at age 57.

1999 – The KISS-produced movie about KISS fans, Detroit Rock City, opens in 
theaters.

2005 – “Walking In Memphis” singer Marc Cohn is shot in the head during an 
attempted hijacking of his tour van after a show in Denver. The bullet does 
not penetrate his skull, and he is treated and released from the Denver 
Health Medical Center.

2005 – The Magic Numbers walk out of their debut appearance on UK music 
show Top Of The Pops after presenter Richard Bacon says the band comes from 
a "fat melting pot of talent." The band leaves in protest of the 
“derogatory, unfunny remarks.”

2006 – Shakira begins the North American leg of her 116-date Oral Fixation 
Tour at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

2007 – Amy Winehouse is rushed to University College Hospital in London for 
a suspected drug overdose. Her label, Island Records, calls it “severe 
exhaustion,” and several concerts are cancelled.

2007 – Jennifer Lopez wins $545,000 in a lawsuit against her first husband, 
Ojani Noa, who is planning to publish a book about their marriage and her 
many affairs.

2007 – Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon declares the day “Frank Zappa Day.”

2007 – Jurors in Phil Spector’s murder trial visit the producer’s mansion 
in Alhambra to get a look at the scene of the crime.

2012 – In a Malibu courtroom, singer Rick Springfield pleads no contest to 
drunk driving charges stemming from a May 2011 traffic stop, and is 
sentenced to a three month rehab program and three years probation.
