So, I'd love to give it a try, but I'm having trouble from the get-go
using git. It returns an error "error: Can't lock ref", and nets me
nothing from the repository.

There isn't much help on the web (from quick google searches, anyways)
to tell me what I'm doing wrong, and there seems to be evidence that
it might be a server error. I tried the hello-world set from the git
homepage, and that worked well, so I don't think I have a problem with
my installation.

Anyone have this problem or familiar with a solution? I'd certainly
appreciate it.

you can visit
http://repo.or.cz/w/microdia.git

There is an option "snapshot" - clicking on it should give you a tarball of the current version.

Since the driver is still in development we advice people to use git since updating is much more comfortable than downloading tarballs all the time.
