I saw no mention of the topography of the site you mentioned except that it was "relatively rugged bushwhack type terrain".
If the actual length of the run were not excessive and the head were "within reason", why not run a length of say � inch black poly pipe or even garden hoses down the run. At the bottom you would have a pressure gage and a gate valve or hose bib. Start the water siphoning and when the pipe is full and all the air is expelled, slowly shut off the valve. Just take a pressure reading & convert that to head. 1 PSI = 2.31 feet of head. Don't skimp on a cheap gage! Try & use one that has a range just under what you expect to use.
