Eric, I didn't mean to imply do anything illegal.......in reality you'd be "pumping" AC directly into the grid with your windy boy approach......it was understood that you'd have the utility required over/undervoltage and over/under freq relays in place when using the direct induction motor approach. Induction machines DO NOT require phase control/flow control and do not cause a short circuit with a slight rpm drift and quite frankly ARE trivial to install. I think you are confusing induction technology with asynchronous technology. There are probably thousands of induction machines pumping into the grid everyday(the technology is accepted in all states) (there are at least 8 within 30 miles of me) and ? windy boy installations. The reason SMA hasn't marketed a "Water Boy" is probably because induction systems are so much simpler and cheaper. Wind energy is soo much harder to channel into the grid because of its wickedly variable nature....hydro on the other hand is quite stable..........again good luck........Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: Eric Kunz To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, May 03, 2005 12:18 PM Subject: Re: [microhydro] Grid-Tie Inverter with Induction Motor as Generator
Thanks for the reply. "Pumping" AC directly to the Grid is not a trivial task for any micro-hydro application and it is illegal here. A Phase Control/Flow Control system would be EXTREMELY difficult to develop to allow a true AC Direct-To-Grid system. A couple rpm drift would cause a short circuit. Additionally, these new high voltage DC Grid-Tie Inverters are amazing and very safe as well. They are UL approved and run at about 93%-95% efficiency and were originally designed for PV Solar Arrays. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
