I installed it on another 5.2 system and may have located the
problem.

It failed here too, and the config.log said that libmysqlclient
referenced a symbol named 'open64' that is not in the libc that
comes with RH5.2.
I grabbed the 3.22.27 source RPM from www.mysql.org, installed it,
removed all the Group(pt_BR) lines from the specfile (since the RPM
version on 5.2 doesn't seem to understand multilingual group
declarations), then an rpm -bb <mysqlspec>, rpm -i <mysql + client +
devel>, after which rpm -bb apache-midgard-1.2.5.spec worked without a
hitch.
Bye,
Emile
