I was setting up midgard from source recently and had a similar problem, in that
the apache server would die without a trace. If I commented out the directives
for mod_php in the httpd.conf file, it worked fine. What was happening was that
I was building php with an option missing, namely --with-apache. It took me
forever to realize that was the issue, but as soon as I compiled php with the
--with-apache=path to apache enabled, everything worked perfectly. I don't know
if that helps, but I know I spent wayyyy to much time on something so simple in
retrospect. I wish you luck!
