It's an extremely high pressure job.  Yeah, it's a game but these guys
have been 'heroes' their entire lives and the pressure to remain so
once they hit The Bigs must be enormous.  Nobody operates at top form
day in and day out.  Slumps are nerve racking and confidence
destroying.  I submit that in some cases the reason the athlete takes
the drugs is to avoid letting his teammates down.  Of course they have
huge egos; who wouldn't?  The fear of failure, the prospect of no more
millions a year, no more adulation and an end to the good life must be
awesome.

On the other side, judging from what happened to my hometown Rocket
and former Yankee, I don't see why they take the risk of getting
caught.  He tried the Bill Clinton defense and it didn't work any
better for him then it did Bill.

I don't think it's the money.  It's the fear of failure.  Losing
endorsements.  Being traded.  Letting down your family, friends and
business partners.  The older they get the harder it gets.  Like all
of us, the bad decisions are often make when your under
