In more cynical moments, I've thought that brewer's (or vintner's) yeast isn't a bad metaphor for humanity. It finds itself in an hospitable environment so it starts to eat/consume like crazy (malt sugar), reproduce like crazy, produce waste like crazy (in the yeast's case, pissing alcohol) until it has finally used up all the food available (in the case of a dry wine) or poisoned itself with its own waste products.
Of course, the end result is something which can provide great pleasure. Maybe there's a message there somewhere ... :-) Francis On 24 Feb., 16:15, Ian Pollard <[email protected]> wrote: > Driving to work yesterday, I caught an interview on Radio 4 with Dr James > Lovelock about his new book *The Vanishing Face of Gaia*.
