I think there already is some plan to save the species, it's called the International Space Station. I'm sure that once Biosphere 2 is perfected and utilized at the space station, the earth will no longer be deemed necessary along with all the people that are left on the planet. If live is sustainable for a long enough duration, the escapees can return to earth to restart the process of self annihilation. Of course the problem then will be sustaining life on earth.
