The goings on are hardly going on to be honest Slip. I'm generally a supporter of a kind of ruthless honesty - perhaps a rather naive approach that more or less accepts that status quo opinion is embroiled with the Undead. In some ways we can never really tell the truth to power and are broadly treated as mad by it if we stray from supplication. Films from New World to Changeling show just how cruel establishments can be, but there is a sense in which we can only watch this as film, not confront it directly. The Soviets used to send their dissidents to the madhouse, and actually our history is not that much better (though it is better). There is a sense in which we dare not look at ourselves and that we need to dare. Yet this needs a spirit of mutual understanding as an aim and a practical recognition that much character assassination and barbarism is waiting once we are prepared to breach taboo. The simple spirit of this is in the notion that one might not share an opinion but does support the right of others to hold it and articulate it. Just as we begin to open up, we forget this is a very dirty world. The balancing acts are difficult.
