We are already at war, Neil, and Obama's policy of withdrawal from
Iraq and a greater concentration on Afghanistan just makes it clearer.
Although I prefer the term I've been increasingly seeing here and
there - Afpakistan. The military engagement here is, in contrast to
Iraq, much less problematic in terms of international law (there's
even UN-Resolution 1368). The former German defence minister, Peter
Struck justified German military involvement in the area 7 years ago
with the comment that "the security of Germany is also defended in the
Hindu Kush." Everyone's nightmare is the scenario in which radical
Islamists take power in Pakistan - a much more immediate threat of
atomic wespons in Islamist hands than anything going on in Iran.
Seen in a global strategic context, the west and India are attractive
for each other - they share a lot of common concerns; Pakistan, China,
markets, IT-co-operation. Despite continuing crises and problems,
India is committed to democracy. India can play the role of honest
broker between Iran and the west ...
And Islam, always Islam. As the recent events in Mumbai show, India
has at least as much to fear from Al Qaida and its clones as the west
does.
